(San Antonio, Texas) November 15, 2007 – San Antonio artist and Our Lady of the Lake University professor James Cobb has been selected by the Austin Fairchild Art Foundation, a non-profit arts organization based in Austin, as the commissioned artist for the organization’s 2007 Thanksgiving Image Project. Each year since 2001, the Austin Fairchild Art Foundation has commissioned an artist to visually convey the spirit of universal thanksgiving. The resulting image and artist’s statement is printed on museum-quality posters and cards, which are given to museums, galleries and non-profit service organizations to use in their charitable activities. This year’s project marks the first time that a San Antonio artist has been selected to create the official image, although San Antonio artists have been finalists in previous years.
“My sense of gratitude is that it is a heartfelt acknowledgement of the experience of good and of understanding the true nature of all things,” Cobb expressed in an artist’s statement. “I was pleased to work focused on this sense of gratitude and consider that it was a unique opportunity to let my own feelings of thankfulness dictate the direction of a work.”
A reception was held on Thursday, Nov. 15 at downtown San Antonio’s historic Peden Iron & Steel Building to officially unveil and dedicate this year’s Thanksgiving Image Project artwork – a triptych entitled GratitudeX3. The artwork will soon be on display at the San Antonio Central Library for patrons and community members to enjoy. On hand to celebrate the dedication were Cobb, Austin Fairchild Art Foundation founders Jill and Dennis McDaniel, and representatives from the two San Antonio-based nonprofit organizations benefiting from this year’s project – SaySi and American Sunrise.
“The Austin Fairchild Art Foundation is thrilled to bring the Thanksgiving Image Project to San Antonio and especially support San Antonio’s historic downtown and Westside communities,” Jill McDaniel said. “San Antonio is at the height of unprecedented growth, and for citizens to encourage revitalization of historic communities and to support artists and organizations that provide services to these communities is truly a wonderful thing. We are thrilled to be a part of it.”
The McDaniels are the developers bringing Steel House Lofts to downtown San Antonio by transforming the Peden Iron & Steel Building into unique loft condominiums, penthouse lofts, and townhomes. The historic warehouse building, designed by Atlee B. Ayers, is being redesigned for residential lofts by Alamo Architects.
The Austin Fairchild Art Foundation was founded in 1984 for the purpose of fostering the production, promotion, understanding and appreciation of art. From the start, the Foundation focused on placing art in public venues. Since its inception in 2001, the Foundation’s annual Thanksgiving Image Project has benefited various non-profit service organizations including Meals on Wheels, Goodwill Industries, and Habitat for Humanity.
